Andy Howell Show at the Upstairs Gallery

By xlarge @ 5:44 pm

XLARGE is very proud to present our 5th artist in our Gallery Series, Andy Howell. Howell is a former professional skateboarder turned artist; fusing styles from graffiti, tribal, graphic novel, caricature, abstract impressionism, Dadaism, etc.
Once described by London’s The FACE Magazine as “Disney on Drugs”, his work pokes a political stick at man’s obsessions and excesses, confining his subjects to the interrogations room of his imagination, and barely giving them breathing room on the canvas. He paints “transcendental moments,” which he describes as “the actual moments when the layman transcends daily mediocrity, whether it be in discovery, triumph, or escape.” He works in sizes ranging from 4”x 6” to 24’x10’ and paints on anything from found doors and tabletops to electrical boxes on the street to skateboard decks to canvas and paper. Howell states, “In all my endeavors, striving to push beyond society’s limitations, I have always felt people wanted to pidgeon hole me into a category or definition, putting me into an uncomfortable box. That feeling often comes across in my work, as well as its converse, complete freedom, which has also been a major voice. My influences at the moment range from early native American art to space age modern design, which has been resulting in pieces that I can only describe as my vision of humans in futuristic tribes.”
He will be displaying new works on canvas along side our limited edition pillows and tee shirts that will be available at the gallery opening on Dec. 6th Thursday, starting at 7 PM.

Sunshine

By xlarge @ 5:54 pm

With Thanksgiving just passed and the holidays on its way it’s always a good idea to put things in perspective. If you get enough time to peal yourself away from blogs about sneakers, clothes, parties, celebrity gossip, etc. then check out livesstrong.blogspot.com. A 15-yr-old girl who calls herself Sunshine, living in Northern Iraq, writes about the struggles of studying for her biology test over loud gunfire, overload in homework due to the school starting late because of violence, dinner table conversations about murder, rape, and being burned alive…At times the entries are written very matter-of-factly and at other times it’s written with a hyperawareness, which is typical of a teenager’sduality. It really gives a different insight to what you may read or see on television about the situation in Iraq.

Dogs and Cats! Living Together!

By Capt. Nemo @ 1:54 pm

Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd are getting back together and revisiting their roles to make a sequel to Ghostbusters 1 and 2 – in video-game form!  Both Aykroyd and Ramis are teaming up for scriptwriting duties and are going far beyond just the typical licensed add-your-voice-to-the-game-you-had-nothing-to-do-with formula.

First Snowboard

By xlarge @ 8:57 pm

I am all packed and ready to leave at the end of this month for Boulder, Colorado for the entire snowboard season. This may sound like I’m an avid snowboarder, but the actuality is that I’ve only been snowboarding twice in my life and it was on the East Coast, so it was really iceboarding and not snowboarding. Hopefully by the end of this season I’ll be able to ride the bunny slopes with the 5 yr old girls with ease. The first step in becoming the king of the bunny slopes–buying your friend’s roommate’s “practically new” snowboard that’s been sitting in the closet for the past 3 years.

Stripper visits school in booking mix-up

By Capt. Nemo @ 2:29 pm

A STRIPPER performed for a classroom full of British teenagers, spanked a birthday boy and asked him to rub cream all over her after a booking error by the teen’s mother.

It is believed the mother thought she had booked a gorillagram to rush into her 16-year-old son’s classroom for a birthday surprise - but astripper turned up instead.

The Daily Mail said the teenager’s mother had told the teacher beforehand that a “birthday surprise” would walk in during the class and requested that it be filmed.

Instead of a gorilla, an adult perforer showed up at Arnold High School in Nottingham dressed as a policewoman and spanked the boy 16 times in front of his classmates, the newspaper said.

She stripped to her underwear while dancing to a Britney Spears song and asked the teenager to rub cream all over her body before the “stunned” teacher called an end to the act.

One student told the newspaper that the performance occurred in the middle of a drama class.

“The teacher suddenly announced: ‘Something is about to happen’,” the student said.

“Then a woman in a very short skirt walked in dressed as a copper. She asked the lad to stand up, which he did, and told him he had been a very naughty boy because he hadn’t been doing his homework.”

The performer put on some music and had the teenager put a collar on her.

“No one could believe it,” the student said.

“Next she ordered him to get on all fours, led him around the classroom and hit him 16 times -one for each year - on the bottom with her whip.”

The newspaper quoted the student as saying that it was wehen the stripper pulled some cream out of her bag that the teacher took action.

“To be fair to the teacher, you could tell she was just stunned, and when the cream came out she told the stripper: ‘That’s it. That’s enough’.”

The student said the birthday boy ran out of the classroom while the stripper packed her bag.
