Sean Duffy - Pop artist
Greatest Hits, Volume II Duffy’s preoccupation with specific cultural moments and their resonance in our collective consciousness are at the center of an artistic strategy that slyly subverts the meaning of gestures and their relevance in a specific time and context. In his new work, Duffy focuses on the pop music star, a figure that personifies cultural moments and at the same time exemplifies the ephemeral nature of celebrity. In his Creatures of the Night series, Duffy transforms old record album covers into portraits that range from sinister to ridiculous. By scraping away large portions of the album’s original photographs and adding black backdrops, Duffy silhouettes his subjects in front of a full moon on a dark night. Triple Victrola is a three tone-armed brass-horned gramophone. It plays 78 rpm records of the hits I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire and Blue Moon by artists including Oscar Peterson and Mel Torme. The records can be played simultaneously, producing dense musical compositions in which passages are foreshadowed and echoed in quick succession. Under the gallery’s high ceilings, Duffy suspends several large scale mobiles that suggest solar systems. Each planet is formed from album covers salvaged from dollar bins. Glimpses of familiar images appear among the spherical collages a reflection of Billy Joel, the Brothers, and the new wave fashions of The Human League. ![]() |
Rich Jacobs - Magazine, Record, and T-Shirt designer
Rich Jacobs autobio born: 1-11-72, long beach, california, currently lives in Brooklyn, New York I was always pretty shy and kept to myself (preferring to do my own thing) I’ve been drawing since I can remember. I used to draw and mess around in all my classes at school - going back to pre-school and kindergarden. i would always look for ways to be able to make things and draw. I also became fairly interested in going fast - so naturally riding skateboards downhills and racing bikes, running around the neighborhood. These things became the general topics of what I would draw most; people going real fast, riding around skateboarding, and moving all over the place. Another big inspiration came from music - i was also fascinated by the speed of music - punk rock and free jazz were the obvious choices. Much of the art I made when I was young was for bands: flyers, posters, lp’s and & 7″” 45 record covers, t-shirts and lots of punk zines. I developed my own bands, printed magazines, and helped do flyers for events/concerts regularly. Later I would start doing illustration and artwork for magazines and art publications. I still to this day try to do projects involving print: magazines, books, posters, record covers, & other fun creative jobs as much as I can. As time went on I also started to show my work more and more in galleries and in art shows. Most of my time now is spent making work for these exhibitions designing things and curating group art shows. For me it comes back to loving to draw and finding new ways to express oneself. |
